David Cameron visited Sedgemoor District Council today. During his visit the Prime Minister toured some of the flood-affected areas within Sedgemoor including Moorland and had the opportunity to meet with local residents and listen to their experiences. He also met Conservative Councillor and Leader of the District Council, Duncan McGinty, and council staff to discuss the flooding response both in the immediate, and longer term.
The Prime Minister also chaired a flood-recovery meeting attended by MPs, Local Authorities and multi-agency representatives at the Canalside.
During his visit David Cameron thanked the council for its, and others partners, response to the flooding within Somerset and praised how the agencies involved are continuing to work together to assist residents during this difficult time.
Leader of Council Duncan McGinty said "We were really grateful for the opportunity to meet with residents from within Sedgemoor who have been affected by flooding alongside our Local Conservative MP Ian Liddell-Grainger and the Prime Minister. It is crucial that the plight of residents, business owners and farmers within Sedgemoor, and across the Levels, is highlighted at a senior Government level. We will continue to support the community in every way that we can during this difficult time".
Chief Executive of Sedgemoor District Council Kerry Rickards said "The ongoing interest that the Prime Minister continues to show for the Sedgemoor area, and especially the previously flooded villages of Fordgate and Moorland, is very much appreciated by all concerned. Every visit re-energises Sedgemoor to push in every direction for the much needed funds to implement the Flood Action Plan.”
This visit follows Sedgemoor District Council’s previous hosting of a visit from the Prime Minister on two other occasions since Sedgemoor District Council declared a Major Incident in relation to this winter's flooding..
