Yeovil Conservatives nearly had to abandon their AGM at The Shrubbery Hotel, Ilminster this week, amid fears that the numbers present would not be quorate. Many loyal members felt that they could not navigate the foggy evening weather safely, in addition to which South Somerset District Council had convened a meeting to discuss the local plan a week earlier than originally timetabled.

Fortunately Councillor Linda Vijeh stepped in to save the day by standing in for SSDC Conservative party leader Cllr. Martin Wale, who along with the party’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Cllr. Marcus Fysh, felt that due to the importance of the discussion over the future plan for Yeovil their attendance was vital.

All in all there was a healthy level of attendance to listen to party Chairman, Paul Bradly, making his report, in which he was keen to focus on the year’s achievements, including the election of three new Conservative councillors to Somerset County Council, and awards to local branches for their excellent fund raising efforts during the year.

In an initiative started by Constituency President Terry Bate, some of the money raised for the party during the year has been shared with local charities to show support. A full programme of further events is planned for the coming year, including ministerial visits, as interviews for candidates for next year’s District Council elections get under way.
