Voters chose Conservative candidate Andy Sully as their new Town Councillor at last Thursday's election.  After polls closed at 10pm, votes were counted in the Bond Room at the Old Vicarage in High Street.

Andy Sully was elected with 308 votes, beating Mark Lithgow (Liberal Democrat) who polled 269 votes, and Jill Mitton (Labour) 113 votes. Andy takes the vacant seat for Wellington, after Alison Osmond (Liberal Democrat) stepped down at the end of May.

After the result was announced Andy Sully said "I believe the town council shouldn't be about party politics, but common sense ideas that are good for Wellington."

"It does not matter how people voted, as I will represent everyone equally" said Andy Sully.

Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams said "Andy will make an excellent Town Councillor, he is very motivated and will provide a strong voice for Wellington East."

Cllr Janet Reed also said "I look forward to working with Andy as I know he will get things done for our town."

The political make-up of Wellington Town Council has now changed, making the Conservatives the largest party with 6 councillors, Liberal Democrats 5 and Labour 4. The turnout at the by-election was 22%.
