Fifty members of the Women’s Institute from across Somerset visited Westminster for a tour of Parliament and to catch up with the county’s MPs yesterday (Monday).
The WI’s annual visit to Westminster was heavily oversubscribed after the success of previous years. Twenty WI members from Wells, 14 from Taunton, 10 from Yeovil, 4 from Somerton and Frome and two from Bridgwater met the Somerset MPs following their official tour.
With the sun shining over Parliament, this year’s event was just as successful. The visit was co-ordinated by Wells MP James Heappey, with fellow MPs David Warburton, Marcus Fysh and Rebecca Pow joining the group for a brief break from the Brexit battle.
Mr Heappey MP said: “It was wonderful to see yet another packed coach of WI members heading to London to visit our nation’s Parliament and see a little of what we do on their behalf. The WI is an important part of so many of our communities and I hope they enjoyed the visit to Westminster yesterday.”
David Warburton MP said, “It’s always a delight to welcome visitors from Somerset to Parliament and the WI ladies were no exception. It was wonderful to see so many WI members here, exploring the nooks and crannies of the Parliamentary estate. I hope they thoroughly enjoyed their visit and I look forward to welcoming many more Somerset WI groups in the future.”
