Wells MP James Heappey has joined the battle against single-use plastic by supporting Surfers Against Sewage’s latest project Plastic Free Parliament.

The initiative, which has just been launched, aims to reduce the amount of avoidable single-use plastic used in Parliament.

Mr Heappey – who has been vocal in his desire to stop the use of avoidable plastic which is finding its way into our oceans – is hoping the Palace of Westminster can lead the way to a more environmentally-friendly future.

He said: “By reducing our plastic consumption by using refillable bottles, using refillable coffee cups and refusing straws, we can all do our bit to make a difference.”

Mr Heappey has seen first-hand the impact of plastic in his constituency, having taken part in beach cleans in Burnham-on-Sea and been shocked by the amount which is washed up on the beach.

He added: “The reality is that if each of us just tried to use one less piece of plastic each day, the cumulative effect around the world would be huge and I am delighted to support an initiative to ensure Parliament can lead by example.”
