Somerset Liberal Democrats chose to spend at least £1,000 a day of your money on interest charges to fund their out of control spending. Local Conservatives at County Hall have paid off a £5 million Lib Dem loan saving local people £1,000 a day.
In 2009 the Lib Dems had left Somerset with debts of over £350 million and having to pay £36 million a year in interest charges alone – that’s more than the Council spends each year on our roads!
Cllr David Huxtable, who is in charge of the Council’s finance, commented “In 2009 the County’s finances were in a mess. The Council’s third biggest spending was on debt interest. The Lib Dems had been reckless for 16 years with taxpayers money. Instead of making tough choices they decided to borrow their way out.
“The 12/12/12 was the day this stopped. Instead of going to the bank to borrow more, we paid off some of our debt.
“We are taking the tough decisions and tackling the mess to give Somerset the best services for the future.”
