David Warburton MP is being challenged by local competitors to a fundraising badminton tournament in aid of Huish Leisure Sports Centre in Huish Episcopi.
Taking place on Saturday 2nd April, the four-hour “Badminathon” will pit the Member of Parliament for Somerton & Frome against local councillors including the Leader of Somerset County Council John Osman, County Councillor Derek Yeomans, Leader of South Somerset District Council Ric Pallister, District Councillors Clare Aparicio Paul and Tiffany Osborne, plus Western Gazette reporter Daniel Mumby and Andrew Lee, editor of the Langport Leveller.
The tournament will take place at Huish Leisure Sports Centre, Wincanton Road, Langport from 2pm to 6pm. Badminton players of all levels are invited to come along and test their jump smash skills against local politicians and journalists. Spectators and supporters are also welcome. All funds raised will go towards new specialist sports equipment for Huish Leisure Sports Centre, including bespoke rackets and nets for children.
David Warburton MP said, “Ok I have to admit that both my parents are qualified coaches, my uncle played for England and my aunt may have been 17 times world champion, but I haven’t played once in over 25 years, and I may be more than a few pounds heavier than I could be, so this is likely to be a bit of a personal challenge! I’m nervous.”
“It’s sure to be a fantastic afternoon and I know that all the competitors are hugely grateful to Clare Aparicio Paul for organising such a great event and for such a good local cause – raising money for improved equipment for Huish Leisure Sports Centre, a terrific local sports facility used by so many people in the area.”
To take part in the Huish Badminathon Challenge, contact Huish Leisure on 01458 251055. Advance booking is recommended, although all participants are welcome on the day. Refreshments will be provided.
