David Warburton, local MP for Somerton and Frome, joined the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Wincanton on Saturday.
While his son James, 8, tried on several pieces of army training kit and inspected various armoured patrol vehicles, David spoke with serving soldiers and members of the British Legion.
David said, “It was a privilege to spend Armed Forces Day in Wincanton again this year, to mark the extraordinary courage and dedication of the men and women who protect our country and our interests, promoting peace, delivering aid and providing us with our security.
“I am hopeful that the Strategic Defence and Security Review, which is currently underway, will show that we must maintain our defence budget at 2% of GDP. I’ll certainly continue to push for that level of spending, and was keen to discuss it with members of our armed forces in Wincanton.
“We have a great many serving families in this area, and they need every bit of support. I must thank Tony Goddard, the chairman of Wincanton Royal British Legion, for inviting me – it looks like my son is truly hooked on the whole thing!”
