David Warburton, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Somerton and Frome, invited the chief executive of Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) Justin Sargent to 10 Downing Street this week to attend an exclusive reception hosted by the Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron.
Samantha Cameron’s occasional Charity Champions receptions raise awareness of UK charities and recognises the valuable work they do for local communities.
David Warburton explained, “I was delighted to have the opportunity to introduce Justin Sargent and the Somerset Community Foundation to Samantha Cameron this week.
“The Charity Champions reception at 10 Downing Street has become something of an institution, with many major charities receiving recognition for the significant work they do. Samantha Cameron wanted to recognise the SCF for their tremendously hard work in promoting vibrant, inclusive communities here in Somerset. This is particularly important given the work they did to manage the huge funds donated during the floods twelve months ago.”
David continued, “During the reception Mrs Cameron spoke of the importance of charity work and of the invaluable personal support she and her husband received in coping with the death of their son Ivan. Charity is clearly something very close to her heart and it was great to acknowledge the Somerset Community Foundation’s work in Somerset.”
Samantha Cameron said, “It was a privilege to meet Justin Sargent from Somerset Community Foundation at 10 Downing Street. Their amazing work is changing the lives of individuals and families across Somerset and it was an honour to celebrate their work at the reception for charity champions.”
Justin Sargent, Chief Executive of SCF commented, “It was a great honour to be invited to 10 Downing Street and meet Samantha Cameron who clearly understands and feels passionate about the role of the voluntary sector in our country today. We saw during the floods crisis how important communities are in response to emergencies, but the reception was also a great reminder of the magnificent contribution made by charities in every community, every day.”
Somerset Community Foundation works with individuals, companies and trusts to support local charities and voluntary organisations that build stronger communities, tackle disadvantage and transforms lives. During 2014 they launched the appeal for the Somerset Flood Relief Fund, raising £1.4million to help people, businesses and communities affected by the floods.
