West Somerset has signed the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control to underline its determination to tackle harm from smoking.
As part of its commitment the Council wants to make sure children do not have to suffer second hand smoke when they enjoy playing in the fresh air in Council-owned playgrounds.
Signs have gone up in play areas across the district: in Minehead – Plover Road, Teal Road, Whitworth Road, Sycamore Road and Warren Road; and at play areas in Watchet, Washford and Williton.
Cllr Keith Turner, who champions Health and Wellbeing Board, and Cllr Dave Westcott, Lead Member for Communities saw the landmark signs being put in place.
The Conservative Councillors said: “Smoking remains one of the major threats to health. Children deserve to be protected from people smoking around them. It’s not much to ask smokers not to light up in these areas.”
