Mark Foster, world title-holder and Olympian swimmer, is to splash down in Taunton on Sunday June 1 after confirming he will open the newly refurbished swimming pool in Station Road.
Mark, who notched up six world titles, ten European titles and two Commonwealth titles, will be joining Mayor of Taunton Deane Cllr Dave Durdan as the pool is officially declared open once again.
He is one of the most successful competitors in British swimming history – and has a Somerset connection through Millfield School. He also had the honour of carrying the GB flag at the opening of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Working with pool operators Tone Leisure, Taunton Deane Borough Council is delighted to be welcoming Mark Foster to the county town. He will join the Mayor in declaring the pool open and watch a synchronised swimming display before taking to the water himself.
He is due to swim against winners of a competition being organised by Tone Leisure – a once in a lifetime chance for the lucky winners. It’s easy to enter – just “like” the cover photo on the Taunton Swimming Facebook page.
Cllr Catherine Herbert, who holds the Sports, Parks and Leisure portfolio, said: “I am thrilled that Mark Foster will be coming to the pool and see at first hand just what we have achieved.
“Mark is a brilliant ambassador for his sport and is so keen to encourage participation, especially among the young. This is our aim, too, so I cannot think of a better person to be joining the Mayor for the opening.”
Mark Foster said: "At a time when I hear that so many swimming pools are closing it’s fantastic to be coming to Taunton to open one. I don't have to tell you how passionate I am about getting everyone in the water and learning to swim. Not only is it a brilliant way to keep fit and healthy, it is also a way to get rid of stress. Considering how many holidays we all spend by the water either at the seaside or swimming pools, it is also a skill that one day may end up saving your life.
