Bridgwater and West Somerset Conservative MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has joined an all-party campaign to demand a better funding deal for schools.
More than 100 MPs have now written an open letter to David Cameron calling on the Government to implement the funding formula proposed by the F40 campaign group, which would distribute government money on the basis of pupil need.
They say it would end the current unfair system which this year will see allocations ranging from £6,297 per pupil in some areas down to just £4,208 in the ten most poorly-funded zones.
In their letter the MPs say the existing school funding model is a muddle which results in allocations that are inadequate and unfair.
But, said Mr Liddell-Grainger: “In the F40 formula we have a system which would slice the cake more fairly and distribute the pieces based on need.
“At a time when every item of government expenditure is under restraint the last thing we are advocating is additional spending. All we want is for the existing funds to be distributed more fairly to end the current anomalies.
“This isn’t about rural schools versus urban schools and it has nothing to do with the political colour of the authorities running our schools.
“What it is about is ending the current situation where there can be wild and inexplicable variations in the funding provided for schools with similar pupil characteristics.
“Our children need a good range of sub jects to study, good resources, sound buildings, manageable-size classes and excellent pastoral support but the current system often prevents some or even all of those benefits from being delivered in some areas.”
