Under One Roof, Somerset’s first housing and jobs fair took place on Tuesday 11th November. Sponsored by David Warburton, the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Somerton & Frome, the free-entry event was hosted by the Cheese & Grain in Frome and welcomed visitors from across Somerset.
Exhibitors at Under One Roof included NatWest, Apple Build & Design, TSB, Lewisgray Estate Agents, Clive Lewis Estate Agents, the Centre for Sustainable Energy, Mendip Community Credit Union and Mendip District Council together with Mendip YMCA, Prospects National Careers Service, the British Army, Sainsbury’s, BlueBird Care, Aster Living, Domino’s Pizza and Sun Traffic Ltd.
The aim of the event was to offer a range of professional advice and information on all aspects of property buying, renting and ownership, and also to help job-seekers and those trying to get back into work. Advice on offer included assistance for first-time buyers, information about social housing and private rental, guidance on mortgages, house-building, shared ownership and Help-to-Buy schemes. For job-seekers there was a wide range of local companies offering job vacancies, training schemes, apprenticeships, back-to-work schemes and careers advice.
David Warburton said, “I’m very proud that Under One Roof has been such a success, and delighted that it delivered real results for both visitors and exhibitors; Clive Lewis Estate Agents had enquiries about lettings and booked mortgage consultations, Domino’s Pizza filled several positions locally, the British Army confirmed new recruits both to the regular army and the reserves, and frankly, even if only one person had walked away with a job, it would have been worth the effort.
“As the region’s first event of its kind, the inaugural Under One Roof was a great starting point in offering solid, professional help for job-seekers and people trying to secure a home of their own. I look forward to taking the project forward to establish it as a popular annual event.”
