West Somerset Council is welcoming EDF Energy’s announcement on more preferred bidders for Hinkley Point C, including South West joint ventures with combined contract values of more than £225 million.
These are the companies and businesses that, subject to final investment decision, are set to benefit from multi million pound contracts for the proposed nuclear development.
It is now estimated that more than 60% of the construction cost will be placed with UK firms, against an initial estimate of 57%.
Leader of West Somerset Council, Cllr Anthony Trollope-Bellew, said as the host authority for the proposed new nuclear development, the news was particularly welcome.
“This is extremely positive news for our area, Somerset and the South West economy.
“West Somerset Council has been working with the supply chain for Hinkley Point C for a number of years, helping and advising businesses to get involved and to work together to make the most of the opportunities on offer.
“A prime example is Somerset Larder that has brought together six food producers to bid for the contract to cater for the workforce and provide a significant boost to an important sector of our rural economy.”
Local businesses are encouraged to sign up to the Hinkley supply chain – advice and information can be found here: www.hinkleysupplychain.co.uk
