Following a review of the library service across Somerset, Conservatives at County Hall have committed to spending an extra £250,000 over two years on books to increase the variety on offer at our local libraries.
The new strategy will see savings of over £800,000 across three years but could enable libraries to open for longer.
Support for the strategy was received by the campaign group Friends of Somerset Libraries.
David Hall, Conservative councillor responsible for Libraries, commented, “Despite what people may have read, the Conservatives have not closed any libraries in Somerset. This new strategy will see the service fit for the future.
“The Library Service is a clear example of what we hope to achieve across Somerset. We have taken a hard look at what we can and can’t afford whilst paying off the Lib Dems £350 million of debt. We can now look to the future and improve local services that are affordable.
“We want to provide great local services at the best price for the taxpayer.”
