The Mayor of London Boris Johnson attended a reception and dinner at the Bath & West Showground last week as the speaker and guest of honour in support of Somerset’s Conservative Parliamentary Candidates for the 2015 general election.
Boris Johnson was met by more than 230 local people at the dinner to support David Warburton (Somerton & Frome), Rebecca Pow (Taunton Deane), James Heappey (Wells) and Ben Howlett (Bath).
He gave a typically amusing and rousing speech, in which he talked about the Government’s achievements and the need for a new settlement with Europe. On European directives, he ridiculed the recently reported plan by Brussels to restrict the power of UK vacuum cleaners, saying “We alone in Britain should be able to decide how vigorously or how hard we vacuum our carpets.” He also revealed that he was brought up in Somerset in a house with no central heating and just one fire for warmth.
Rebecca Pow said "It is wonderful to get backing from Boris; he represents so much that is good about the Conservatives. In typical Boris fashion, he was highly entertaining at the dinner on the subject of Europe trying to control the power of our vacuum cleaners and on routing the Lib Dem ragwort from the country."
David Warburton said, “It’s always a huge pleasure to welcome Boris Johnson, and we were delighted and privileged that he was able to spend time in Somerset to support the work we’re doing.
“I was very pleased to see that he went round and spoke to everyone in the room. Like me, I’m sure they found him great to talk to. He is without doubt a terrifically amusing and entertaining guest.”
“It was also great to have Boris’s firm support. His appearance was a great boost to the hundreds of people present, and I’m looking forward to his successful bid for a seat next year so that he can be welcomed back to the House of Commons after his seven year break running London.”
